Brave New World Vertical City
Brave New World Vertical City is a claustrophobic new science fiction novel that combines elements of Brave New World and Parable of the Sower. Tristan Scott, a scientist and author, has written his first full-length novel, which is sure to resonate with fiction readers of all backgrounds in a time when the effects of overpopulation and diminishing natural resources are becoming increasingly apparent.
In a world without loneliness, Edgar Pacey is the only one. On the island of Tristan da Cunha, his enormous skyscraper home, Vertical City, is filled to capacity with the last of the human race. Edgar, a carbon miner who lives underground, struggles to get through his days without any privacy or solitude. To the disbelief or confusion of those around him, he frequently asks, “Is their way of life normal?”
When Edgar’s quick thinking in a freak mining accident earns him a lot of attention, it lets him into a part of the city that no one else can see, the revered upper floors. Edgar uses his newfound freedom to look for a flaw in their revered city, inadvertently leading him to the terrifying cost of humanity’s continued existence. Guided in part by this fateful turn of events and in part by a selfish desire to satisfy his own doubts, Edgar uses his newfound freedom. Edgar will have to put his own life at risk to force a complacent society to reevaluate itself, which could result in the collapse of their enormous tower and humanity’s last refuge.
Tristan Scott has a Ph.D. in molecular medicine and was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He currently works as a researcher with a focus on gene therapy and lives in Los Angeles. Tristan has always had a passion for writing when he isn’t manipulating genetic material. It started in high school and grew to the point where he took an extra creative writing class at university while working on his Bachelor of Science degree.
Tristan has a full-time job in science, but he still finds time to write on weekends and in the evenings. He has written a number of poems and short stories that have never been published, but he has published a science fiction short story called “An Unexpected Future on Nature Futures.”
Brave New World Vertical City, his first full-length novel, has been published and is available for purchase. Keepers of the Faith, his second novel, and Little Worlds, a collection of related short stories, are both nearing completion. As his next big project, he is currently working on a “scientific thriller.” Tristan’s stories frequently explore the cyclical nature of humans, the dangers of dual-use technology, the danger of overconsumption of our limited resources, and he strongly supports an evidence-based society. However, magic and dragons are always welcome.
