Mother in Law,” directed by Prince Joshua Nana Morrison Budukuma, is a different kind of romantic dramedy that looks at family ties, commitment, classism, and cultural customs in the context of contemporary black love. “A little blue box” is where it all begins. His African American girlfriend receives a proposal from an African man. After she says yes, the lovers begin making plans for their future together; but not without a MOTHER IN LAW’s SHEnanigans!

Marriage is viewed as a business arrangement between two families in many cultures in order to secure a legacy through children and build wealth and power. Only the dealmakers and dealbreakers will survive to tell their story in a world where choices are dictated by cultural and societal pressure. Will the two lovers bend the rules on their own terms or will they allow the rules to bend them when they are at a crossroads where they must make potentially fatal choices?

In “Mother in Law,” the audience will get a front-row seat to a train wreck of wedding nuptials that went wrong for the sake of preserving #BlackLove.

Success Star Productions produced “Mother in Law,” with Demetrio Deterville and Tiana Bibish serving as producers.

Black Love

Kumi, an immigrant fine arts photographer, falls in love with Koya, an African American magazine publisher and art collector. Despite the insurmountable obstacles posed by their cultural differences, the two agree that taking the risk is worthwhile.

Until their worst nightmare appears, hopes and aspirations are boosted. He missed the fact that Kumi’s culture requires him to marry from his family’s tribe! His parents cannot compromise on the fact that he cannot marry outside the country. On the other hand, Koya’s parents are skeptics about Kumi’s culture, which supports polygamy. The mother-in-laws are not taking the situation lightly.

On behalf of the groom, Mama Sallia, Kumi’s mother, travels from Africa to the United States in an emergency to “fix things” before the wedding plans get out of hand. She makes a mysterious plan with another African woman, Kiola, who lives in America. Chioma, the daughter of Kiola, is chosen to wed Kumi.

The Samuels, Koya’s parents, are also skeptical of Kumi and Koya’s union. They are both extremely upset about Mama Sallia’s refusal to cooperate. The unthinkable happens just as it appears that the lovers will wed.
