The Black Athlete Revolt
Dr. Anderson examines the rise of Black athletes as advocates for social justice in his recently published book, “The Black Athlete Revolt,” and how today’s athletes have gone beyond protesting to effect significant change for Black Americans. He discusses the significance of Black athlete activism during the civil rights movement, the commodification of athletes in the 1990s, and how athletes in the twenty-first century have used their wealth and influence to bring about long-lasting societal change.
Dr. Anderson wants people to know that sports not only provide an avenue for discussion when it comes to race relations, social change, and basic human rights, but they also provide an avenue for entertainment. Sports have the power to change the world, declared the late South African President Nelson Mandela in 2000. He intends to carry on that legacy through my work.
Marlon Edge, the Associate Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, stated that The Black Athlete Revolt is a necessary read for anyone who wishes to truly understand the contentious historical relationship between sports and politics. Edge was referring to the book. Dr. Anderson provides a comprehensive examination of the Black athletes and political figures who pioneered the call for social justice in this book, as well as the ways in which contemporary Black athletes have used that framework as motivation to continue the fight for societal change during one of the most significant periods of racial unrest.
