Benefits Of The National Merit Scholarship

National Merit Scholarship

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a renowned scholastic grant contest for secondary school students in the US. The program is subsidized by enterprises and establishments, and it grants to students in light of their educational performance and different elements.

To be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in their junior year of high school. The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test that measures critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills.

Students who score high on the PSAT/NMSQT are considered for National Merit Semifinalist status. National Merit Semifinalists are the top-scoring students in each state, and they represent approximately one percent of the nation’s high school seniors.

National Merit Semifinalists must then complete a scholarship application, which includes submitting transcripts, letters of recommendation, and an essay. The application also includes a section where students can list their extracurricular activities, awards, and honors.

Based on their scholarship applications, approximately 15,000 National Merit Semifinalists are named National Merit Finalists. National Merit Finalists are the top-scoring students in the nation, and they represent approximately one-third of the National Merit Semifinalists.

Variety Of Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Program offers a variety of scholarships to National Merit Finalists. These scholarships are awarded based on a variety of factors, including academic achievement, financial need, and intended major.

  • National Merit $2,500 Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to National Merit Finalists who are not otherwise receiving a National Merit scholarship.
  • Corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to National Merit Finalists by corporations and foundations. Some examples of corporate-sponsored National Merit scholarships include the Boeing Scholars Program, the Intel National Merit Scholarship Program, and the National Semiconductor National Merit Scholarship.
  • College-sponsored National Merit Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to National Merit Finalists by colleges and universities. Some examples of college-sponsored National Merit scholarships include the Alabama National Merit Scholarship, the Florida National Merit Scholarship Program, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s National Merit Scholarship Program at the University of Chicago.
  • Special Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to National Merit Finalists who meet specific criteria set by the scholarship sponsor. Some examples of special scholarships include the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s National Merit National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholarship and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s National Merit National Merit Indian Scholarship Program Scholarship.

In addition to these scholarships, National Merit Finalists are also eligible to receive other awards, such as special scholarships and recognition from their schools and communities.

Competition For The National Merit Scholarship

Competition for the National Merit Scholarship is very high. In 2022, there were over 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT, and only about 15,000 students were named National Merit Finalists. This means that only about one percent of the students who take the PSAT/NMSQT are named National Merit Finalists.

The competition for National Merit scholarships is even higher for specific types of scholarships. For example, there are only a few hundred corporate-sponsored National Merit scholarships available each year, and there are only a few thousand college-sponsored National Merit scholarships available each year.

Despite the high competition, there are a number of things that students can do to increase their chances of winning a National Merit scholarship. Here are a few tips:

  • Take the PSAT/NMSQT early. Students can take the PSAT/NMSQT in their sophomore year of high school, but it is more common for students to take the test in their junior year. Taking the test early gives students more time to improve their scores if necessary.
  • Prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT. There are many resources available to help students prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT, including practice tests, study guides, and tutoring programs. Students should take the time to prepare for the test so that they can perform their best.
  • Take challenging courses in high school. Colleges and universities look for students who have taken challenging courses in high school. Students should consider taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses and honors courses to boost their academic records.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities. Colleges and universities also look for students who are involved in extracurricular activities. Students should get involved in activities that they are passionate about and that demonstrate their leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Write a strong essay. The essay is an important part of the National Merit scholarship application. Students should take the time to write a well-crafted essay that tells their story and highlights their strengths.
